For the past two Saturdays I've been going to cafes with friends to sketch people. This is just my first step in practicing to get better doing quick gestures. I still have a long way to go with being loose and fluid, but it helps to have these weekly sessions to focus on improving. Hopefully my next cafe post will be a lot looser and full of energy!

I drew this in my gesture class and thought I'd color it for fun. In gesture class we're encouraged to try and tell a story with each pose. I'm really bad at giving my poses life so I'm hoping this class will get me working in the right direction. The model was Asian and wearing a Korean dress, but I thought she looked flirtatious showing off her ankle, so I thought of the girls from the Regency trying to be sexy.

I wanted to color some other poses but my camera is broken and this is the only one I could fit in my scanner. I should buy a new camera but I'm too lazy and broke.

I'm working up to possibly making carvings of some drawings I did a while back on the computer that were made to look like block print. For now, I'm getting practice by making stamps for our books. I got the idea when Stu and I recently lent a ton of our books to different people. Too bad I can't stamp those ones!

Okay, so I didn't actually draw this at the zoo. I really wasn't feeling it that day. Plus every kid in a 50 mile radius was there with their school, it was a tad crowded. However, excuses aside, I tried and my sketches that day are not suitable for public eyes. So I drew this guy in the comfort of my own home off of a photo I took instead. I made this paper cutout a while back for Stuart's sister. Her best friend Isa passed away and I made this for her in memoriam. I painted some paper with water colors since we don't have the right color construction paper, then I cut out the shapes and pasted them. There's glass glare because I forgot to take pictures before I hotglued it into the frame :-/

How to Train your Dragon at Gallery Nucleus

Yesterday I went to a panel of Dreamworks artists who worked on 'How to Train your Dragon' at Nucleus. The panel consisted of Alessandro Carloni, Pierre Olivier Vincent, Simon Otto, and Nicolas Marlet. The overall presentation was great and funny, and all four of them seemed like really nice guys, I only wish Nicolas spoke up more. I'm a big fan of his work, but he was the quietest one there!
I wish I could work at Dreamworks with those guys, but it seems like you have to be European to be truely awesome artist. All four of them had thick French and Italian accents! I'm so jealous that I was born here instead of there! In the end, I got my book signed by all of them, it was a great panel for a great movie. If anyone out there hasn't seen it yet, I highly recommend it! I especially loved Toothless' character animation acting like a cat. It was just like Itty Bit! I couldn't help myself doodling her as a dragon.

She would be terrifying as a giant dragon! We would all be dead.

Everyone in Popgun vol. 4 was asked to do a web banner that showed a hint of their comic, and this one is mine! It looks kind of dark and scary, not really reflecting what my comic is actually like. However, a lot of people like it because its mysterious and makes you think, "oo, I wonder what THAT comic is about!" Haha, at least, I hope thats what it does :)

Stuart and I just got a new cat! I'm not really a cat person and I've never had a cat before, but she is totally AWESOME! Her name is Itty Bit because she's a miniature American Bobtail. She's spoiled and whiny and absolutely adorable! She kind of looks like a little lynx.

She is super curious, and a little hyper, and so smart! She can even play fetch like a dog! I think I like cats now :)

I figured I need to do more art for just fun and practice, and what better way to do it than with fan art?! I think I'm getting better with the brush ink, and the lovely lightening effect was done with some masking fluid I found. It was only meant to be a quick piece, so I didn't fix a lot of the mistakes. Hopefully you will enjoy it as much as Stuart, who can defeat every guy in SF4 except for this badass :D

I am so rusty, and this class is after work and I'm always exhausted. However, I've been learning a lot, including how to work through my exhaustion and focus. Karl is a great teacher, he is really good at breaking things down simply and efficiently. Well, I have a lot of learning to do, so hopefully, this will be part one of an ongoing series of progressively better entries!

(possibly contains SPOILERS!) (also, don't be daunted by the massive amount of text!)

So I saw the Watchmen on Friday with all the opening day masses. Here are my thoughts if you’re interested:

I went in already accepting that it was going to be nothing like my experience with the book. Comics and movies are two completely different animals, and I shouldn’t be expecting the richness and detail and intimacy that only the book could offer.

To keep a lot of the action, leave out most of the details, and still keep somewhat of the plot, the storytelling would have to be drastically changed to be the least bit comprehensible. Not wanting to be a stereotypical geek who automatically loathes the movie because it’s not to the exact specifications of the book, I tried to remember this and be optimistic and open-minded to see the movie for what it was.

However, my brain wouldn’t let me!

Throughout the whole movie I couldn’t help myself from recognizing scenes and comparing them to how the scene played out in the book. I think this kept me from just letting me watch the movie as a movie. I thought there were some awesome moments and the actors for Night Owl, Rorschach and Doctor Manhattan were great. I was not happy with how Ozymandias wasn’t given much back-story. His character seemed shallow, not expressing his deep motivation for his actions or his paralyzing doubt at the end.

In the end, the movie felt like a movie with characters from a book I once read acting a story that I didn’t fully recognize. Kind of like fan art; an artist paying tribute to something much greater. I left the movie unsatisfied, and a little confused. I’ll have to watch it again to figure out if it was truly a good movie, because I’m still not sure. I was attached to the characters because I already knew them, but would someone who hadn’t read the book have had the chance to care about the characters in the short amount of time given to them?

For those of you who saw the movie but haven’t read the book, let me know what you thought!

Watchmen Out Today!!

I don't really geek-out about a lot of stuff, but Watchmen is definitely something the geek in me can't deny. I am a huge fan of the book and I wasn't so sure about the integrity of the movie, but I can't help getting excited. Thus, the shirt:

Rorschach's signature is on the back collar, and for you super watchmen buffs out there, hopefully you can tell what expression this is on the shirt! Oh yeah, and to clear up any confusion, yes I made it myself! with fabric paint and then folding it in half :)

The biggest painting I've ever done! It was 3' x 5' in oil, and it was pretty intense. I was commissioned by a family friend for a wedding present, and orchids were the wedding flowers. It was a lot of work, but kind of fun. This was also my first attempt at some form of time lapse. It was pre-'my fancy new camera' so the color and lighting changes throughout and the quality is not the greatest, but it is what it is!

Life has been busy, as usual. It finally took a really bad cold to give me some free time to start sketching again. My friend got some cool brush pens so I was trying them out by drawing, what else, a rhino.

From Geek to Nerd

Looking back can be painful... at least for me it is. I was such a horrible geek in Middle school and High school, I don't know how I ever survived. Not that I'm any better now, I've just changed into a horrible nerd. But, the nerd life is a lot more fun so I've got no complaints.

I did this little therapeutic exercise because everyone else was doing it. Stuart showed me a bunch of blogs of artists who decided to draw their own interpretations of themselves as teens, and I was immediately inspired. It really was fun to make fun at myself from being an awkward little band geek, turning into my annoyingly confident (in my head) nerdy self. (Yes, thats a Scott Campbell ninja on my shirt.)

I've given up on being cool, because its impossible, save for two or three people on the planet. I think everyone is a nerd, but most are just in denial about it.

Fragments of Time (homage to Eadweard Muybridge)

I just finished these little paintings a couple days ago for a small art show in my boyfriend's home town. I don't enter very many shows (because I'm lazy), but he convinced me to enter this one. It's a show called Fragments at the Bakersfield Museum of Art, and every piece must represent fragments in some way on a 5" x 5" canvas. I did three under the same theme: Fragments of Time (homage to Eadweard Muybridge). So not only are they literal fragments of a whole subject, but they're also fragments of an action frozen in time by photography. I thought it was a pretty good idea, I hope that the museum people like it.

If you don't know what photography I'm talking about, you're missing out. I have several Muybridge books that seriously rock.

I drew these mermaids a while back for fun. I inked them recently for some practice and I colored one of them quickly to see how it would look. Besides that, nothing new. Except that I read Watchmen for the first time, twice in a row. That book is freakin' intense! But the movie is going to suck!

Poppy Painting

My mom and my aunts and uncle commissioned me to do a painting as a gift for my aunt Sandra. She likes poppies and so I painted this GIANT painting for her. Its probably the biggest painting I've ever done, I think about 40" by 30". It was fun having all the space to swing my brush around. The photo is not quite on, I can't figure out how to take a good photo of a painting without warping the colors or creating massive glare, and it seems the resolution is crappy, but this is the general idea.

Savage Warrior Girl...

Again with the warrior girls. Well, this is something I was just doodling around with at work in my spare time. I don't know what it is about violent women that I have an interest in, but its fun to make them. (Maybe its a stress reliever.)

I didn't get very far with this drawing, but I had all the under sketches saved and I've never done a "show my process" blog before. Just some quick roughed out sketches and the finished product.

Teen Coppertone beach gal

This is a drawing I did about a month ago that I haven't completed. The dog needs some work and I eventually want to color it to look like an old-fashioned poster with the coppertone name at the top. My family keeps asking "why is she naked?" Duh! Its the little coppertone girl! :D I was inspired by Vera Brosgol, who is AMAZING! Check her out!

Yeah, so I know I said I'd try posting something every day. ::sigh:: empty promises. Well, I've been so busy working that I've been too lazy to do stuff for myself. However, even though its work, some of the stuff I've been doing in illustrator has actually been fun. So here are some examples of the work I've been doing lately for the man. And yes, that is a pile of poo next to the cow skeleton. Not my idea.

This is actually something I made as a thank you/goodbye card to the people at the studio where I interned, Marvel Lionsgate. At the time they were making a movie that had some scavenger people with weapons, and I made up this crazy little girl with a flamethrower in the style of the movie. Isn't she precious? :D

Finally a new post

Well, I've finally added something new to my blog. I've been doing plenty of work, but I'm not much of a self promoter, so none of its going on my site. However, that's a bad habit and I've got to put a stop to it and get my work on here!

This is something I was just working on tonight and I decided to upload it. Its part of a character line up for a concept I've been working on for a comic story. Its a long and complex story that just seems to get deeper and deeper and more complex, so I've just been working on it slowly and saving it for a time when I feel I have developed the resources and the skills to complete it. I'll upload the complete character line up when I finish, but for now, this is Eve... for now.

For the life of me, I can't remember how or why I thought of this idea, but once the concept was in my head, the designs came out so easily. My favorites are the girl with long hair and the tall guy with the skull paint. It was fun making these and I think I will follow up with some expressions of these characters.
